Memory in AI Products Is a Trust Contract
Memory is one of the most requested features in AI products. Users want the AI to remember their preferences, their history, their context. It seems obvious: memory makes AI more useful.
But memory is also one of the most dangerous features to implement poorly. Every time an AI remembers something, it creates an expectation. And expectations create obligations.
Memory is not just a technical feature. It is a trust contract.
The Implicit Promise
When an AI references something from a previous conversation, it signals: I'm paying attention. This matters to me. I'll continue to track this.
That signal creates an implicit promise. The user now expects the AI to continue remembering. They expect consistent behavior around what gets remembered and what doesn't. They expect memory to be accurate.
Breaking the Contract
Breaking this contract feels worse to users than never having memory at all. Consider these failure modes:
- Inconsistent memory: Remembering some things but forgetting others with no apparent logic
- Inaccurate recall: Remembering something wrong, especially something personal
- Inappropriate surfacing: Bringing up past context when it's not relevant or welcome
- Silent forgetting: No longer referencing something without acknowledging the change
Each of these feels like a betrayal. The AI made a promise and broke it.
Designing Trustworthy Memory
If you're building memory into an AI product, design for the contract, not just the capability:
- Be explicit about what will and won't be remembered
- Give users control over memory (what's stored, what's forgotten)
- When uncertain about memory, ask rather than assume
- If memory changes, acknowledge it rather than pretending otherwise
- Test for edge cases where memory might feel inappropriate
Memory done well is magical. Memory done poorly is creepy or unreliable. There's very little middle ground.
